When and where does the Blackbird Film Festival take place?

The 2021 Blackbird Film + Arts Festival will be hosted at the Greek Peak Mountain Resort from Thursday, June 17th to Sunday, June 20th and features Outdoor Tented Film Screenings during the day and Drive-In Movie Screenings in the evening as well as an Artisan Craft Fair, Live Music, Beer + Wine Tastings, and much more! A full schedule of events can be found HERE.

What should I expect at the festival?

After a long year of quarantine, it's time to get out and enjoy a weekend packed full of Outdoor Socially Safe Activities at the 2021 Blackbird Film + Arts Festival! The festival includes Outdoor Tented Screenings of over 100 Independent Films from around the world as well as nightly Drive-In Movies and S’more Firepits! On Saturday and Sunday, be sure to check out our curated Artisan Craft Fair featuring 20+ Local Artists and Live Music along with Wine and Beer Tasting as well as an assortment of Family Fun Activities! Additionally, Blackbird and Greek Peak have partnered to host a special Father’s Day BBQ on Sunday, June 20th with smoked chicken and Brisket!

How do the Drive-In movies work?

Much like a vintage drive-in movie theater, attendees park their car in an assigned parking spot, tune their radio to a specific station and enjoy films from the comfort of their own car. To ensure attendees can see the screen, our projectionists must wait until sunset to begin which may delay the start time for some of the earlier screenings. Attendees are also able to purchase food and beverage from the concession stand as well as order from the TRAX-2-Go menu for "car-side" delivery. Attendees are welcome to bring chairs and sit outside their car however, please know that you'll need a radio to hear the audio from the films. More info about the Drive-In Movies can be found HERE.

How old is Blackbird?

Blackbird was started in 2015 as a small film festival for high school aged students in Cambridge, MA. However, Blackbird soon began accepting film submissions from around the world and hosted an online festival in late December 2015. In 2016, Blackbird moved to Cortland, NY and developed its physical festival presence. When the COVID19 pandemic struck in 2020, Blackbird was forced to adapt and ran our first ever, Sunset Cinema Festival with drive-in movies. Building off the success of the 2020 season, Blackbird partnered with Greek Peak to host a full Film + Arts event during mid-June!

Who attends Blackbird?

Most of the festival attendees are film enthusiasts, community members and filmmakers from the surrounding areas – NYC, Boston, Toronto, Montreal, Syracuse, and Buffalo. Blackbird also attracts a large number of media production students from nearby colleges.

I am strictly a film fan and don't work in the business. Can I attend the festival?

Absolutely! It's FREE to attend all film screenings.

Is there a runtime / length limit for films?

Yes, Blackbird has a runtime limit of 150 minutes. We would encourage you to review submission statistic information HERE before submitting.

Is there a release date requirement for films?

Technically, we'd liked films to have been completed within the last three years. However, we have included older content before. With that said, we'd like to bring new content to our audience and so older films may have a harder time being accepted.

My film has already screened at several film festivals, does this mean it is disqualified from Blackbird?

Does Blackbird offer submission fee waivers?

No, at this time Blackbird does not offer submission fee waivers. Submission fees are necessary parts of Film Festivals that go to cover a variety of event costs such as venues, foods, entertainment, promotional material, etc. However, Blackbird does offer a variety of promotional codes throughout the festival season. Follow Blackbird on Twitter @Blackbirdfest or on Facebook for special deals and promotions.

Are there any discounts available?

Yes, please use the promotional code: WEBSITE for 30% off submission fees on FilmFeeway.

I am from a US sanctioned country (such as Iran) and therefore cannot pay a submission fee, can I receive a fee waiver?

While this is very unfortunate and unfair, we still cannot offer you a fee waiver. There are several reasons for this. Firstly, we receive hundreds of requests like this each season and we simply cannot ask our judges to review so many additional films that have not paid a submission fee. Our judge's time must first go to the filmmakers who have paid a fee to submit their work. Secondly, we have no way of verifying whether a filmmaker is actually from a sanctioned county. Unfortunately, we discovered that some filmmakers were using this as an excuse when in fact they are not currently living in a sanctioned country. So again, we do not offer fee waivers for this.
